Kansas Severe Weather Awareness Week 2019 Information

Posted on February 27, 2019 at 9:20 AM

The National Weather Service in coordination with local emergency management agencies will conduct a statewide tornado drill at 10:00 AM Central Time on Tuesday, March 5th with the back up day on March 7th. This drill is part of the Kansas Severe Weather Awareness Week. Which runs from March 4th to March 5th. Each day has its own type of weather topic:

  • MONDAY: Preparedness
  • TUESDAY: Tornado Safety (Statewide Tornado Safety Drill at 10 AM Central/9 AM Mountain)
  • WEDNESDAY: Lightning Safety
  • THURSDAY: Hail and Wind Safety
  • FRIDAY: Flood Safety

An informational packet has been developed which details information about severe weather awareness week, severe weather statistics, and other information about severe weather in Kansas. To view this packet, please click here.

The AWL Weather Network and Althouse Sound and Weather will NOT be broadcasting the EAS message on the AWN livestream. However, many of our products and services may display a test tornado warning that day. Please do not be alarmed and it will only be a test.

If a tornado warning is issued for your area, it is best to go to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sterdy building. Avoid windows! If in a mobile home, a vehicle, or outdoors, move to the cloest shelter and protect yourself from flying debris. Remember that if a tornado occurs at night, that they can be hard to see at night. Never wait to see or hear the tornado coming, by then, it is too late.

The AWL Weather Network and Althouse Sound & Weather hope you stay safe this severe weather season and we look forward to making sure that you get accurate weather information anytime and especially when severe weather strikes. You can get weather information from us from the following sources:
