Today kicks off Kansas's severe weather awareness week with day 1.
Let me ask you a few questions.
Do you own a weather radio?
Do you own a first aid kit?
Does your family have a storm shelter or other designated safe spot?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, great. However, many people don't have these home essentials.
NOAA WEATHER RADIO
The National Weather Service broadcasts weather information via a NOAA Weather Radio. These radios are different than your standard AM/FM radio. These radios are designed to listen to the weather radio broadcast and when an alert tone comes across the broadcast, it will sound a loud alert tone if the alert is for the area you programmed into it. Weather radios can range from $40.00 all the way up to $150.00. They can be purchased at most retail stores such as Wal-Mart, Walgreens, and Dillions.
FIRST AID KIT
A first aid kit has tools in it to help patch up injuries. They can be picked up at most retail stores and are a must for any emergency kit.
KNOW YOUR SEVERE WEATHER PLAN
It has been a while since Kansas has seen any severe weather or tornadoes. Tomorrow, the state of Kansas will conduct a statewide tornado drill at 10 AM Central. This is the perfect time to reherse your severe weather safety plan or just go over your plan with your family.
Remember that tomorrow is the statewide tornado drill, you may get a test tornado warning tomorrow via your cell phone, weather radio, and outdoor sirens (tornado sirens).
